There are multiple Python libraries that can read and modify GNUCash data files if you wish to do any automation (like write a script that will estimate year-to-date tax liability from the GNUCash file contents, or whatever data mining you wish to do). It has a price that cannot be beat, and the open format means that your data is not held hostage anymore. The most important advantage I could see for GNUCash over others is the fact that it is Open Source and uses open formats and it will likely outlast other commercial options like Quicken. It really didn't take much time to get used to this accounting method. Its accounting method ("double entry" accounting) was the one that impressed me the most - basically, every transaction is a transfer from one account to another (Expense categories in Quicken are converted to Expense accounts in GNUCash), and this made everything quite transparent, and easy to backtrack and fix any errors.

To my surprise, except for a couple of hiccups with GNUCash's QIF importer, my conversion went through just fine and within a few hours of mucking around, I had a GNUCash file with account balances matching Quicken with the full accounting history preserved!
